Power Should Protect

Strength worthy of the name is measured by what it protects—and by what it refuses to do when it could dominate.

Read with attention

Strength is not proven by how much damage it can inflict. Power worthy of the name is measured partly by what it refuses to do when it can. This is true of physical strength, political authority, money, technology, intelligence, and public voice.

The vulnerable are not a sentimental footnote to serious politics. They are the test. If power does not protect the innocent, shelter the exposed, and widen the circle of human dignity, what exactly is it for?

Power should protect.
